Cannabidiol (CBD): What we know and what we don’t

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound in the family of cannabinoids found naturally in the marijuana plant. While cannabidiol (CBD) is a crucial component in medical cannabis, it is directly derived from the cannabis plant, a cousin to marijuana. CBD, or Cannabidiol, is the second most common active ingredient found in marijuana (marijuana). CBD that comes from cannabis is legal as long as it meets specific requirements.


 

In Canada, the sale of cannabis and its derivatives is legal, while the European Union allows for the sale of CBD derived from hemp (low-THC varieties of cannabis) but not from marijuana (high-THC cannabis). All 50 states have laws that legalize CBD, with various degrees of restrictions, and although the U.S. still views cannabidiol (CBD) as being in the same category as marijuana, it does not regularly apply enforcement to it. The U.S. stance on CBD is mixed, based partly on whether the Cannabidiol (CBD) comes from hemp or marijuana. In other words, if CBD products are made with the cannabis plant, they are legal; if they are made with marijuana plants, they are illegal at the federal level, regardless of local laws.



 It is very easy for a brand to put cannabis seed oil on their product, decorate it with cannabis leaves, and emphasize the word cannabis, so that consumers believe they are buying CBD products, when they are not actually getting CBD. With marijuana - which is just cannabis with less than 0.3% THC - being legalized, as well as cannabis-derived products that contain CBD, the potential exists for these products to make a major impact in drug testing programs. Thanks to the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill, which legalized industrial hemp, as well as legalizations at the state level of medicinal and recreational cannabis, CBD products have skyrocketed in accessibility and popularity in the past year. In June 2018, the FDA approved prescription-use of Epidiolex, a refined form of cannabidiol (CBD), to treat two types of epilepsy.

 



Marijuana as medicine The FDA external icon (FDA) has approved one marijuana-based, plant-based medicine called Epidiolex, which contains a purified form of CBD. Epidiolex, which contains CBD, is the first marijuana-derived medicine approved by FDA to treat these conditions. Name any medical condition, and chances are someone is treating it with CBD or another cannabis-based product.
